United States – A groundbreaking study reveals that a once-daily combination blood pressure pill is more effective than traditional treatments that add medications individually, as reported by HealthDay.
Enhanced Blood Pressure Control with GMRx2
The research indicates that 81% of patients achieved controlled blood pressure within one month using the new GMRx2 pill, compared to just 55% with standard treatments. Despite standard care’s adherence to guidelines and more frequent clinic visits, the combo pill demonstrated more significant reductions in blood pressure, according to Dr. Dike Ojji, head of the Cardiovascular Research Unit at the University of Abuja.
Dr. Ojji highlighted the significance of these results: “In low-income countries, fewer than one in four people achieve blood pressure control, and in high-income countries, it ranges from 50% to 70%. Achieving over 80% in just one month is remarkable.”
A New Approach to Hypertension
The GMRx2 pill invented by George Medicines contains telmisartan, amlodipine, and indapamide in a single tablet, which patients should take once a day. It emerged that this new therapy is easier to administer as it combines several hypertension drugs into one tablet.
An average drop in systolic blood pressure, in a six-month trial, recorded for patients taking the combo pill was much higher at 31 points than in patients on usual care at 26 points. And on average, this corresponds to a 5-point difference on a measure called the AHA/NHLBI insensitive total cholesterol/HDL ratio, which equates to a 10% reduction in first-time risks of stroke, heart attack, and heart failure, as reported by HealthDay.
Response to a Global Health Issue
Atherosclerosis, including hypertension, is recognized to affect more than one billion individuals globally and is an acknowledged cause of nearly eleven-million fatalities annually. Currently, George Medicines intends to apply for a license from the U. S. Food and Drug Administration for the GMRx2 pill, hoping to expand the usage of this potent substance for many people.
